American researchers have established a link between walking speed and general health, suggesting that the pace at which a person moves may be an indicator of illness.
Blood tests, urinalysis, radio, MRI ... the means to assess our general health and diagnose a possible pathology are not lacking. However, an even simpler method would make it possible to affirm whether one is in good health or not: to observe the walking speed of an individual. This was suggested by US researchers at the University of Southern California on November 12, 2018.
Fast walkers are less at risk for health problems
"The speed of walking is a very important indicator of mortality," says researcher Christina M. Dieli-Conwright. Indeed, the study shows that the deterioration of general health is less in people who naturally tend to move at a steady pace. On the contrary, slow walkers are more likely to suffer from health problems. Simply because a brisk walk would mean more activity, and we know that a sedentary lifestyle can lead to a number of diseases (cardiovascular diseases, cancers, osteoporosis, etc.).
